US Accuses Syria of Mass Executions and Burning the Bodies

The Syrian government is executing prisoners so often that it has built a crematorium to dispose of the remains - and cover up just how many people have been disposed, the State Department revealed on Monday.

Assad's regime, he alleged, has detained between 65,000 and 117,000 people over the same period - the first five years of a civil war that has left hundreds of thousands dead.

The department released commercial satellite photographs showing what it said was a building in the prison complex that had been modified to support the crematorium.

"Russia has either aided in or passively looked away as the regime has conducted an airstrike against a United Nations convoy, destroyed east Aleppo and used chemical weapons, including sarin, against civilians in Idlib province on April 4", Jones elaborated Monday. It also stepped up criticism of Iran and Russian Federation for supporting the Syrian government.

Moscow, Mr Jones said, "has either aided in or passively looked away as the regime has" engaged in years of "mass murders" and other atrocities, including extensive bombing of hospitals and the use of chemical weapons on both civilians and rebel forces.

"We're not going to signal what we're going to do and what we're not going to do", Jones said, but he added that the USA would "bring evidence forward to the global community".

Jones told reporters Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had raised concerns about Assad's brutality with Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during his visit to Washington last week.

Newly declassified information found that at least 50 detainees each day are executed in prison, said Stuart Jones, an Obama administration appointee who is the acting assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern Affairs.

Amnesty said the executions took place between 2011 and 2015, but were probably still being carried out and amounted to war crimes. He said he hoped Russian Federation would help pressure the Assad government.

Finally, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, Hawaii Democrat, met with Assad earlier this year and came back with nothing critical to say about him, and in fact accused the United States of "supporting terror groups". "Can [Assad] go at the end of negotiations, or does he have to go as a precursor to negotiations".

The White House said May 15 that it is "unimaginable" Syrians will choose to keep Assad. After last month's attack in northern Syria, Trump said the Syrians crossed "a lot of lines" for his administration.

"Syria will never be stable and secure as long as Assad is in power", Spicer said. During the briefing, he showed aerial images of what he said was a crematorium.

"I am encouraged by the increasing engagement, increasing interest by the USA administration in finding a de-escalation, a reduction of violence", de Mistura said.
