Trump's budget plan hits poor people hard

Mulvaney, a tea party favorite who until February represented SC in the House of Representatives, got an earful not only from Democrats but also fellow Republicans over the size of the reductions President Donald Trump proposed in his $4.1 trillion 2018 budget.

That transparent gimmick has been roundly mocked by economists, with former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers calling it "the most egregious accounting error in a presidential budget in the almost 40 years I have been tracking them".

Meanwhile, Medicare and Medicaid fraud prevention efforts would receive a $70 million increase next year.

This is "demagoguery at the very highest level", Mulvaney told "Fox & Friends" on Thursday, singling out New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who said "children will die" if this budget is enacted.

"For example, I do not support proposed cuts to National Institutes of Health".

Host Steve Doocy jokingly asked Mulvaney if it was true that children would die and seniors would starve if Trump's budget passed.

As FiveThirtyEight's Ben Casselman explained, the reason this level of growth is not now attainable is that during the 1990s, the USA saw "rapid growth in its labor force and rapid gains in the productivity of that labor force".

Mr Mulvaney's appearance was one of four planned for Wednesday as Trump Cabinet officials fanned out on Capitol Hill to defend the president's budget, which contains jarring, politically unrealistic cuts to the social safety net and a broad swath of domestic programmes.

Democratic lawmakers and many private economists have expressed skepticism about the budget and its ambitious 3 percent growth target.

One day after calling President Donald Trump's proposed budget "grotesquely immoral", Sanders pounced on Mulvaney, the director of the Office of Management and Budget.

Anti-poverty advocates say both Carson and Mulvaney are fundamentally wrong, that most low-income people would work if they could. John McCain, R-Arizona, called the budget "dead on arrival", and Rep. Hal Rogers, R-Kentucky, predicted that foreign aid cuts in the budget "will not stand" and called other cuts "draconian, careless and counterproductive".

Trumponomics is anything that can get the US economy soaring to 3 percent growth, the administration's top economic advisers told Congress this week, saying the only way the federal government can balance its books is to get the economy humming that fast.

So, what's the plan for Medicaid?

In other words - a cruelty wrapped in a lie."What we are doing is growing Medicaid more slowly over the 10-year budget window than the Congressional Budget Office says that we should or says that we will under current law", Mulvaney said. "Why do we change it?"

"I don't know that your priorities are much different from my priorities for USDA", he told Aderholt.

"This budget relies on absurd economic projections and pretend revenues that no credible economist would validate", Jayapal said.

This is a budget which offers you tax breaks if you are a member of the Trump family, but if you are a child of a working class family you could well lose the health insurance you now have through the Children's Health Insurance program and massive cuts to Medicaid.
