Trump repeats criticism of Germany, Merkel stands by stance

"We Europeans must really take our destiny into our own hands".

Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel had sharp words for Trump after the president concluded his first official tour overseas, which took him to Saudi Arabia, Israel, Brussels and then Italy for a G7 summit.

Gabriel also criticized the Trump administration for selling weapons to Saudi Arabia, its refugee policy, and its lack of commitment to fight climate change.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel underlined her doubts about the reliability of the United States as an ally yesterday but said she was a "convinced trans-Atlanticist", fine-tuning her message after surprising Washington with her frankness a day earlier.

While German businesses say they are optimistic about the general business climate in India, they point out a raft of problems that diminish their enthusiasm to pump more investment into the country.

"American colleagues apparently do not realize that, when they leave, there are others who are coming in, for example China, with completely different ideas". "Trump accelerates it, but it was to be expected".

"I have interacted with Chancellor Merkel on multiple occasions and I have always admired her insight on a wide range of issues".

"With change comes insecurity, skepticism ... and, not infrequently, the glorification of the supposedly good old days", Merkel said. "But anyone who puts on national blinkers and has no view of the world around him will ultimately get lost".

He said, "Europe has been hit hard by terrorism". "And above all else, we must not submit to Trump's arms-race logic".

"Whether it be bilateral relation, humanitarian issues, regional or global issues, every discussion with Chancellor has been very beneficial for me", the Prime Minister said.

Gabriel's center-left SPD party is a partner to Angela Merkel's CDU in Germany's current ruling coalition, but the two groups are also set for a showdown in general elections in September.

After Modi-Merkel meet on Monday, one can say that Modi used the "future roadmap" term in his post after giving a careful thought.

"Here is a situation where it's six, seven if you include the European Union, against one", she said.

"We witnessed the signing of no. of agreements/declaration of intent".

Trump did not hold a news conference after the summit but later tweeted that he would make his "final decision" on the Paris accord this week.

While not a fully-fledged pivot towards Asia, the scheduling of the visits - which come off the back of disappointing G7 and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summits - sends a clear message that Germany is happy to look elsewhere for strategic partners and business deals if both the United Kingdom and U.S. lose interest.

"[French President Emmanuel] Macron and other European leaders seemed to have the same takeaway" from the encounter with Trump and his delegation at NATO's headquarters and the G-7, he said. "She's someone who is very sober about the guys with the big agendas and big egos, be it (Russian President Vladimir) Putin, be it (Turkish President Recep Tayyip) Erdogan, be it Trump".
