No second spike in cyber attacks is 'encouraging': British minister

Microsoft sends out a Windows XP patch to block new ransomware

The cyber-attack that has hit 150 countries since Friday should be treated by governments around the world as a "wake-up call", Microsoft says.

An NHS IT worker told the Guardian that users experienced a "bitcoin virus pop-up", demanding payment before they could access their PCs.

Barts Health, which runs the hospital, was among a fifth of the country's NHS trusts to have its computers infected by ransomware.

Australian organisations will return to work as the local fallout from the weekend's global cyber attack becomes clearer.

The agency said Monday that "very few" people have paid the ransom.

He warned governments against stockpiling such vulnerabilities and said instead they should report them to manufacturers - not sell, store or exploit them, lest they fall into the wrong hands.

Dr Anne Rainsberry, NHS incident director, said: "We have been working with 47 organisations providing urgent and emergency care who have been infected to varying degrees".

This story has not been edited by Firstpost staff and is generated by auto-feed. Brad Smith, Microsoft's president and top lawyer, said Sunday that the company has the "first responsibility" to address the problem.

"It is important to understand that the way these attacks work means that compromises of machines and networks that have already occurred may not yet have been detected, and that existing infections from the malware can spread within networks", said the U.K.'s National Cyber Security Centre in a statement Sunday.

Speaking to reporters in Beijing, where he is taking part in a conference, Putin said there was no significant damage to Russian institutions, including its banking and healthcare systems, from WannaCry.

A hacking group called Shadow Brokers released the malware in April, claiming to have discovered the flaw from the NSA, Kaspersky said.

Senior security staff held another meeting in the White House Situation Room on Saturday, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation and National Security Agency were trying to identify the perpetrators of the massive cyber attack, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, stated Reuters.

"These ransomware attacks have been on the rise over the last three years, it wasn't exactly something that was a shock - what was surprising is the scale of this one".

The NHS has said hospitals have had to cancel some outpatient appointments because of the attack.

MICROSOFT has issued a chilling warning to governments and businesses around the world following a massive cyber attack over the weekend.

Victims ranged from Renault auto plants in France to the FedEx delivery company in the United States, as well as Russia's interior ministry and Chinese universities.

It is understood the number of systems affected at each of the Scottish health boards fell into single figures - bar NHS Lanarkshire where more machines were affected.
