The S&P 500 .SPX was up 10.12 points, or 0.42 percent, at 2,401.02 and the Nasdaq Composite .IXIC was up 21.12 points, or 0.35 percent, at 6,142.35. Like the S&P 500, after a pullback last week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average regained strength on Monday.

Both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed Monday at record highs.

On the U.S. economic front, the National Association of Home Builders released a report showing homebuilder confidence has unexpectedly improved in the month of May.

WASHINGTON - Construction of new homes fell for a second straight month in April, pushing activity to the lowest point in five months. The weakness was led by a big drop in construction of apartments, a volatile sector.

ANALYST'S VIEWPOINT: "As reporting intensifies on Trump's potential mishandling of classified information, and renewed speculations on the rationale of his dismissal of Comey, markets are becoming concerned whether key legislation on tax reforms could be deferred or derailed", Mizuho Bank said in a daily commentary.

The S&P 500 Index (NYSEARCA:SPY) climbed 0.5% to close at a new record of 2,402.32.

Traders also had their eye on the latest crop of quarterly results from companies.

Home improvement chain Home Depot reported a better-than-expected first-quarter performance, but TJX Cos Inc, owner of T.J. Maxx and Marshalls stores, posted slowing comparable-store sales growth and a disappointing current-quarter profit forecast. A rise in large-cap tech stocks, including Facebook and Alphabet, led the gains. The Nasdaq gained 20.20 to 6,169.87.

That gave a boost to energy shares, including oil giant Chevron, up 0.8 percent, the midsized producer Marathon Oil, up 1.8 percent, and oil-services giant Halliburton, up 3.0 percent. The stock lost 33 cents to $8.99.

Tesla was down 2.1 per cent at $318.01 after Morgan Stanley downgraded its rating on the electric-car maker's stock. Transocean rose 39 cents, or 3.7 percent, to $11.01, and Marathon Oil gained 52 cents, or 3.6 percent, to $14.80. Oil-producing countries have cut production in hopes of supporting oil prices, and Russian Federation and Saudi Arabia said they want to extend the cuts through the first three months of 2018. Benchmark U.S. crude rose $1.01, or 2.1 percent, to settle at $48.85 per barrel. Brent crude, used to price global oils, added 38 cents to $52.20 in London. The International Energy Agency reported Tuesday that the oil market is on course to reach a supply-demand balance this year.
