Flood fighting continues in Central, Eastern and Western Canada

In Quebec, the province hardest hit by the flooding, more than 1,500 homes have been flooded in 121 towns and cities and almost 1,000 people evacuated, the emergency services said.

Televised images showed residents filling sandbags across communities in Quebec, while people were evacuated by boat or canoe.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has promised that the federal government will provide aid where needed and that includes the federal Canadian Armed Forces troops that have spread out in Quebec. "It is more likely to remain high, or even continue to rise", he said.

Toronto, Canada's biggest city, was forecast to receive 20 mm (1 inch) to 30 mm of rain on Friday, with more over the weekend, according to Environment Canada, which issued a rainfall warning.

The province of Quebec has called in the military to help with extreme flooding conditions and 400 soldiers fanned out to various areas, Saturday. Almost 300 outbound and inbound flights at Pearson International Airport, the country's biggest, have been delayed or canceled, according to the airport website.

About 124 cities and towns in the province of Quebec were affected by flooding that inundated 1,326 residences, according to Urgences Quebec.

In the nation's capital, Ottawa, 15-25 mm of rain was expected.

To the east of Ottawa the community of Clarence-Rockland declared a state of emergency in anticipation of continuing heavy rain, while across the Ottawa River in Gatineau residents were waging a largely futile struggle to prevent the deluge from engulfing their properties. Dozens of road have been closed and residents have been urged to leave their homes.

In Quebec, one of the hardest hit regions, some 700 homes had to be evacuated.
