European Union demands talks with U.S. over possible airline laptop ban

US set to ban large electronic devices on flights from Europe, reports say

Airports and airlines in Europe have already been working on plans for a possible extension of the ban since the U.S. announced the first restrictions on larger electronic devices in the cabin, according to several industry sources.

A congressional official said it appeared that Homeland Security was likely to expand the ban soon, but did not say when or to what airports. If it spreads to Europe, "it's simply a matter of time" before laptops are banned in the cabins of domestic US flights, he said.

Bloomberg quoted Burke as saying in an email, "DHS continues to evaluate the threat environment and will make changes when necessary to keep air travelers safe". Will you be checked at security for devices in correlation to your ticket - as many passengers will pass through the same security area who are not travelling to the US?

Airline executives met with officials from the Department of Homeland Security to discuss the issue on Thursday, the Los Angeles Times reports.

There is also a concern that the ban adopted in March might not stop a terrorist with a bomb-rigged laptop from simply flying to Europe to catch a US -bound flight.

The ban on large electronic devices in airline cabins could expand to flights from the USA to Europe, and travel industry organizations are speaking out on the change.

Unsurprisingly, the ban that was imposed in March targeted non-stop flights coming from what the U.S. government considered to be havens for terrorist factions, particularly those that target the US.

Lufthansa has been working internally on different scenarios for responding to any extension of the ban, spokesman Helmut Tolksdorf said.

The U.S. airlines still hope to have a say in how the policy is put into effect at airports to minimize inconvenience to passengers. Government officials have been meeting with US airlines on a almost weekly basis and intend to do so again later this week.

In a statement released by the Federation of Airline Pilots Associations (IFALPA), which represents pilots worldwide, they said "In fact, the fire proceeded as if the halon were not present".

The ban was first implemented in March, and is in place for United States flights departing 10 airports in Muslim-majority countries.

Storing laptops and larger tablets in baggage holds creates safety concerns because their lithium batteries can catch fire.
