Arizona State wins record 8th women's golf championship

Arizona State women

The Arizona State women's golf team won its eighth NCAA Championship behind individual champion Monica Vaughn and the clutch performance of Linnea Strom.

Freshmen Pimnipa Panthong and Karoline Stormo both won their matches for the Flashes. She birdied the next two holes, won a third straight hole with a par and was 4 up. After Stephanie Lau eagled hole No. 11, Strom's lead was cut to one in match play and Northwestern looked to dig its self out of a hole they dug early with poor putting. Heavy rain on Tuesday forced the semifinals to finish the next morning.

"[I told myself] I am not going to let this team down, I had three bad holes and I am not going to give up", Vaughn said. Vaughn's pitch from 40 yards short of the green hit the pin and settled a few feet away, and the birdie sent the match to extra holes.

All five Sun Devils shot their best rounds of the tournament thus far. Strom had to make a 7-foot par putt on the 18th hole and she won the next hole to beat Stanford and advance. "It's match play and anything can happen and I just went out this morning and fought till the end". The senior did not disappoint, after dropping the first hole, Komoto never trailed again winning the matchup by three with two to go.

Monica Vaughn, who won the NCAA individual title on Monday, kept her big week going by almost holing a wedge on the 18th hole and making birdie to send her match against Stanford freshman Albane Valenzuela to extra holes.

Sophomore Janet Mao of Northwestern and Roberta Liti faced off in the penultimate matchup of the championship.

The decisive match Mao against Gabriella Then, who was 2 up with four to play until Mao won the 16th and the 18th holes to force overtime.

It had been the rallying cry for the Arizona State women's golf team during the 2016-'17 college season, the date serving as a metaphor for what the most decorated program in women's college golf history was striving to accomplish. Northwestern, with the benefit of a home crowd, is trying to become only the second Big Ten team to win a women's golf title.
