8-year-old was bullied before killing himself, attorneys say

Two days after the January 24 assault, the boy went to his bedroom, knotted a loop in his necktie and hanged himself from his bunk bed, according to the Enquirer.

The Cincinnati Public Schools released a choppy and grainy 24-minute-long surveillance that appears to show Gabriel trying to shake the hand of a boy who had earlier hit another child and then collapsing to the floor after being pushed into a wall at the entrance of a boys' bathroom.

The school district said in a statement Friday that "in an effort to be completely transparent, we are releasing the video that was reviewed as part of an investigation by the Cincinnati Police Department".

A Cincinnati police release Thursday acknowledged that it investigated Gabriel's death on January 26, but it said it would not be appropriate to comment at this time.

WLWT investigator Todd Dykes talked to Gabe's mother, Cornelia Reynolds, after the death of her only child.

Branch said that the boy's mother wants answers.

'I just feel like enough is not being done, and I feel like stuff is being swept under the rug, ' Reynolds said. System spokeswoman Janet Walsh said the video would be released "when it's ready", possibly later Thursday or Friday.

Leader also said the video shows other students pointing, laughing and kicking Taye before school staff found him and revived him.

"I witnessed behaviour that in my belief is bullying and could even rise to the level of criminal assault, if not for the young ages of the perpetrators", he added in a report.

Branch said an assistant principal eventually found Gabe and took him to the school nurse. One of them, Kathryn Lundy, said she pulled her two children from the school two years ago because of bullying.

Branch said school officials did not tell Reynolds that Gabe had been assaulted.

In a statement Friday to ABC News, Cincinnati Public Schools said, "Our hearts are broken by the loss of this child, and our thoughts are with his parents and extended family". A Cincinnati Police homicide detective, Eric Karaguleff, viewed the video February 1, a week after Gabriel's death. The boy's mother was asked to pick him up and take him to a hospital "to be checked out", the statement said.

Dr. Lakshmi Sammarco, the Hamilton County, Ohio, coroner, announced her decision Thursday on a radio program and later told The Cincinnati Enquirer, "We will review all the new info including the video when it's provided". "Any questions regarding this matter should be directed to the Hamilton County Coroner's Office". Other students are then seen mocking the boy and kicking him while he was down, she said.

Leader said Gabriel had no history of mental health issues and described him as a happy-go-lucky kid.

The third grader, a model student, would often visit the nurse's office and would ask his mom to stay home.

"There needs to be a lot more response in that school to what is going on and the parents need to know what's going on".

"Mom is really heartbroken that she didn't know what she needed to know to protect her son", Branch said, according to the station.

Some media reports have characterized the incident as bullying, but I would note that bullying is a very specific form of peer harassment that involves repeated malicious actions by a peer.
